There is a quietness to life that I seldom hear,
Distraught as I am with distraction and fear.
There are rare and precious moments when the world is both forgotten and embraced,
when my heart then finds contentment, peace, and grace.
But why are most moment a means rather than an end?
Perhaps I strive for a love upon which I need only depend.

Listening to the rain, I see the first rays of dawn amongst the midst,
as if the morning is awakening the world with a soft and soundless kiss.
And here am I, barely awake and already seeking something for which to strive,
am then truly awakened by the rain, and only then, feel alive.
Anxiety, pain, anger, and loneliness, all my heart has recently known.
These my constant companions, their seeds of affliction have sown.
Thus I come to thee, for I have no where else to go.
Water these seeds with grace, that in your time they might grow.
Use their fruit to proclaim your goodness, that others might know the sweetness I have tasted.
Use them also to nourish my meekness, thus shall my pain not have been wasted.
Teach me not to despise my life’s lot;
I ask only that I might not live, and love thee not.
A Meditation on Psalm 102:17 and 34:18
The LORD regards the cry of the destitute,
he does not despise their prayer.
He bends down his ear to the humble,
extending his tender care.
He is close to the broken-hearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Those knowing their own brokenness,
through his love can bear it.
Kings and beggars he regards alike
and blessing to all he does impart.
Man esteems the outward appearance,
but God searches the heart.
And alas, now, will he look upon me,
with all my failings and pride?
What but “grace” can I plead?
My destitution I cannot hide.
Yet hope I have that will endure,
joy of heart, and love secure.
For all my failures Jesus does forgive and redeem;
He makes a broken man whole, his grace to esteem.
I am…
Swimming while drowning,
sweating while cold,
lost while finding,
broken while whole.
Weak and needing,
poor and pleading.
Empty, but not alone,
helpless, but not disowned.
You are…
Loving while finding,
healing while binding.
Life, I find, is not about me.
Truth, can be, hard to believe.
Love, Oh Father, help me receive.
Glory, Oh God, to you and not me.
